Hospitality is full of opportunity. It’s a sector where people can build fantastic careers, and where pubs and bars bring communities together at a time when more than a quarter of adults say they feel lonely always, often, or some of the time. But alongside all the connection and energy, we also know the work can be both physically and mentally demanding. That’s why open conversations about wellbeing, and especially men’s mental health, are so important.
Why this month matters
The run-up to Christmas often brings long hours and increased pressure, and we see the impact of that first-hand. In the final quarter of last year, our 24/7 helpline received nearly 1,300 calls, up from 740 in the previous quarter, an increase of almost 75%. Those numbers highlight just how many people in our community are carrying more than they feel able to share.
The wider picture is difficult to ignore too. Three times as many men as women die by suicide, and suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK. These statistics show just how vital it is that we make space for honest conversations and ensure support is easy to access whenever someone needs it.
Why men can find it harder to talk
Many men still feel pressure to stay strong, stay in control, and work through problems alone. That can make it harder to open up, even when things feel overwhelming. But recognising when you need support, and reaching out, is an act of strength.
At LTC, we believe support should be practical, compassionate and rooted in the realities of hospitality life. That means offering safe spaces to talk, easy-to-use tools, and 24/7 help that meets people where they are.
Recognising signs of struggle
Depression or stress can show up differently in men. It may look like irritability, anger, withdrawal, or throwing themselves into work in a way that masks deeper worries. In a busy industry where pace is constant, these signs are easy to miss.
Creating a culture where vulnerability is met with care and not judgement makes a real difference, and gives men the confidence to ask for help early.
No one should struggle alone
Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month is a chance to check in with each other, start conversations, and remind the men across our industry that support is always here. Whether it’s you, a colleague, or someone in your team who’s finding things tough, you’re not alone and you never have to face things in silence.
If you need someone to talk to, our helpline is open 24/7 on 0808 801 0550. You can also explore free tools and resources on the LTC Wellbeing Platform anytime.
