Finding Secure Housing

Navigating the housing landscape can be challenging, especially for those who have dedicated years to the licensed trade. The LTC offers valuable resources and partnerships to help you with housing, whether you're approaching retirement or facing job-related housing issues. Here’s how LTC can support you.

Anchor Hanover Partnership LTC has partnered with Anchor Hanover, a not-for-profit provider of secure, affordable housing for individuals over 55. This partnership prioritises housing applications for those who have worked in the licensed trade for at least five continuous years, significantly reducing the waiting time compared to the general public. Anchor Hanover offers various housing options, including 1-bedroom flats, 2-bedroom properties, and bedsits, with some locations providing extra-care support and 24-hour emergency call systems. Tied Accommodation
You are a service occupant if your home comes with your job, and you must live there to do your job. Tied accommodation means you live in housing that comes with your job. You might pay rent to your landlord or it may be deducted from your wages. In some cases, you may get paid less because your employer provides you with somewhere to live. If you live in accommodation provided by your employer, you usually have either service occupier or service tenant rights.
Understanding Your Rights Many in the licensed trade live in tied accommodation provided by their employer, which can pose problems if you lose or change your job. As a service occupier, your right to stay in your accommodation typically ends when your employment does.
Knowing your rights as either a service occupier or service tenant is crucial. Service tenants, who live in employer-provided housing but whose job does not depend on living there, have the same rights as most other tenants.
If your job ends
Your right to live in your tied accommodation usually ends when your employment finishes. If your employer decides to end your job and accommodation, you may be able to challenge that decision if you disagree
with the reasons for your dismissal. You will need to take your case to an employment tribunal.
Your right to challenge the loss of your accommodation depends on whether you pay any rent towards your accommodation.

Finding Rented Accommodation
Steps to Secure Housing When looking for rented accommodation, consider whether to rent from a landlord or letting agent, the costs involved, and the necessary steps to be accepted by a landlord. The “How to Rent” guide from the UK government provides detailed information on your rights and responsibilities, as well as tips on living in rented accommodation and handling tenancy issues.

Local Housing Allowance (LHA) If you are on a low income, you may be eligible for LHA, which helps with rent costs. Use the LHA bedroom calculator to determine your entitlement. Additionally, councils may offer discretionary housing payments for rent deposits or advance rent, particularly if you are facing homelessness or have an urgent need to move.
