Richard had worked in the Licensed Trade for over 40 years and enjoyed his life as a pub landlord. When he fell ill with pneumonia last year, his life changed forever.

While seriously ill, Richard was unable to work in his pub and the business fell into financial difficulties. A massive bill for repairs was the final straw and an insurmountable financial challenge that resulted in the need for Richard to file for bankruptcy.

As he and his family had always lived in their pubs, Richard found himself without a job, without a home and struggling to see a way out of the debt he was in.

Finding alternative work was further complicated by the health needs of his child who suffers from both Asthma and Type 1 Diabetes. With regular hospital stays and daily visits to school to administer insulin injections, Richard and his family were under huge pressure.

He contacted the Licensed Trade Charity and says that we “listened, understood and helped him”. The team were able to give advice on the housing process and pros and cons of social housing versus private housing. We supported Richard and his family through the bankruptcy, finding housing and specific family needs that make their lives just that little bit easier.

Richard and his family are still working through their issues and the Licensed Trade Charity Services team remain at the end of an email or phone call to help them.
